Shopping for Colorado home insurance? Start with what the policy would do after a loss: how it pays to rebuild, how the roof is settled, what deductible you owe and which types of water damage are covered. Then compare premiums.
Watch Ty: do you know what your home policy covers?
Ty calls out wind and hail deductibles and coverage limits for belongings such as electronics and jewelry. Use his video to start your review, then work through the checklist below.
Check the rebuilding limit and settlement terms
Ask how the dwelling limit was calculated and whether extended replacement cost or building-code coverage is included. Rebuilding cost is different from your home's market price. Review the treatment of belongings as well as the structure. NAIC home insurance coverage overview.
Ask about hail, wind and the roof
Find the roof settlement wording and any separate wind or hail deductible. Ask whether age, materials or an endorsement changes how roof damage is valued. Have the agent show the deductible in dollars using your policy's figures.
Watch Ty: Roof claims — replacement cost or actual cash value? Then ask how those terms apply to the quote in front of you.
Discuss wildfire exposure and property changes
For a home near vegetation or in a wildfire-exposed area, ask how the insurer assesses the property and what conditions, exclusions or mitigation requirements apply. Report changes such as additions, a new roof or different occupancy so the quote reflects the home being insured.
Separate flood from water backup
Most homeowners policies do not cover flood damage. A sewer or drain backup is a different coverage question; ask about any endorsement, limit and exclusions. Do not assume a water-backup option replaces a flood policy. FEMA's flood insurance guidance.
Watch Ty explain water backup and flood coverage. This public video is labeled for Texas homeowners; use it to frame the general distinction and ask Ty about your Colorado policy.
Review belongings, temporary housing and liability
Ask about personal property limits, valuables, additional living expenses after a covered loss, and personal liability. Tell the agent about a home business, rental use or other changes that could affect the policy. NAIC home insurance overview.
A checklist for your Colorado home quote
Is the rebuilding estimate current, including recent renovations?
How is roof damage settled, and what is each deductible in dollars?
What flood, water-backup and other exclusions should I understand?
Are belongings, temporary housing and liability limits suitable for my situation?
Am I comparing the same limits and settlement terms across quotes?
Is the cheapest Colorado home insurance quote the best choice?
Price is one part of the comparison. Ask what protection changes between the quotes and which costs stay with you after a loss. For ways to explore discounts and deductibles, use Ty's home insurance premium checklist.
